Slotted Filter Disks

Most people who do any kind of mud testing are familiar with ceramic filter disks for filtration testing. The ceramic disk simulates real-world formations and provides greater insight into the filtration characteristics of a mud system than standard filter paper. And filter disks have been the standard for Permeability Plugging Tests for years.

Less familiar are the relatively new stainless steel slotted disks. These disks simulate reservoir formations in a different way. Unlike the ceramic filter disk, which are made from natural material, the stainless steel disks have precisely machined slots for the test fluid to flow through. So, you always know the exact pore size of you filter medium.

Slotted filter disks come in two sizes. The ¼” thick disks fit where the ceramic filter disk fits. They can include either 1 or 3 equal slots with no taper. The slots are the same size on both sides of the disk. For disks with 3 slots, the size of the slots ranges from 100 micron to 5000 micron. For disks with a single slot, the size ranges from 200 micron to 5000 micron.

Other disks are 1” thick and fit inside the inner diameter of the cell where the test fluid goes. These disks include a slot around the outside edge for an o-ring to prevent fluid from flowing around it. The thicker disks only include a single slot, but that slot can be either straight or tapered. Tapered slots are wider on one side of the disk than the other. Straight slots range from 1000 to 5000 micron. And tapered slots range from 1mm-2mm to 5mm-6mm.
